OLUM Morrison Concert reviews
Doobies and Your Funk
The concert date finally arrived after a disappointing postponement of The Doobie Brothers in June at West Palm Beach’s iTHINK Financial Amphitheater AND a band member getting Covid and canceling a couple dates. My biggest fear, with a hotel room already reserved and no refunds available for any reason, was typical south Florida thunderstorms in the summertime. To our amazement, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. Especially considering it was an outdoor venue, the sound system, mixing, harmonies, musicianship, tempo, transition, etc were superb! I’ve worked many Doobies shows in my 43 years working in the front-of-house part of the operation, and I can honestly say this was the tightest I’ve heard them sound since they opened for Boston in 1979 at Orlando’s old Tangerine Bowl. I’m not sure which band member had Covid, but “Jesus is alright with me” apparently motivated a special unity and togetherness in most aspects of this live show. The only fault I could find was when Marc Russo killed it with his saxophone. However, on the big screen, the camera was still on Michael McDonald on piano. Then, after what was probably only a long 30 seconds, the video guy caught it and swapped cameras. Minor technicality. Everyone from the parking staff, to merch, to concessions, to chair rental and guest services were absolutely on point. It was an utter joy to experience the OLUM 50th anniversary tour at iTHINK Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach Florida.
